Wanting to open another book i recently read (to refer to as i wrote its review) i spotted this title. Set just four years after women are able to vote and little more than half a century after slavery is abolished, retta, annie and gertrude struggle to make their own way in a white male dominated world. The novels plot can sometimes veer toward melodrama and even overload, as when a raging diphtheria epidemic, the revelation of a criminal secret, and a hurricane all happen at once.
Narrators this book is superbly performed by the narrators who interpret each characters tone and character with authenticity and never overtake the thread of the story with their own personalities or political proclivities. Annie coles, gertrude pardee, and retta bootle. A hole can be a haven, but you can't stay in a hole forever.
Do you ever read a book and absolutely love everything about it but when youre ready to review/recommend it, all you can do is gush, its soooo good!.
